Application Development
Visual application builder with durable workflows and 6 execution paradigms.
Visual application builder with 6 execution paradigms, durable workflow execution, and embedded version control for building complex business applications. Application Development turns DXP from a content platform into a full application platform.
Build Applications, Not Just Websites
subtitle: Visual workflow builder, durable execution, and embedded version control — everything you need to build complex business applications on DXP.
Visual Workflow Builder
desc: Drag-and-drop workflow composition with conditional branching, loops, and human-in-the-loop steps.
6 Execution Paradigms
desc: Synchronous, asynchronous, scheduled, event-driven, streaming, and durable execution modes.
Embedded Version Control
desc: Branch, diff, and merge application logic with the same workflow as code.
from-content-platform-to-application-platform
From Content Platform to Application Platform The visual workflow builder lets you compose complex business logic by dragging steps onto a canvas and connecting them with conditional branches, loops, parallel forks, and human-in-the-loop approval gates. Each step can invoke APIs, query databases, transform data, or trigger other workflows. Six execution paradigms cover every application pattern: synchronous (request/response), asynchronous (fire-and-forget), scheduled (cron-based), event-driven (triggered by system events), streaming (continuous data processing), and durable (long-running with checkpoint recovery). Embedded version control lets you branch, diff, and merge application logic with the same workflow developers use for code. Feature branches for workflows mean teams can experiment with business logic changes without affecting production.

faq section
Section 1
What kinds of applications can I build with DXP?
DXP Application Development supports any application pattern: approval workflows, data processing pipelines, scheduled tasks, event-driven automation, real-time streaming applications, and long-running business processes with human-in-the-loop steps.
Section 2
How does durable execution work?
Every step in a durable workflow is checkpointed to persistent storage. If the process crashes, the workflow resumes from the last checkpoint — not from the beginning. This makes durable workflows suitable for long-running processes that span hours or days.
Section 3
Can I mix visual workflows with code?
Yes. Each workflow step can contain custom code (TypeScript or JavaScript) alongside visual configuration. Advanced developers can define entire workflows in code using the DXP workflow SDK while still benefiting from the visual monitoring and debugging tools.
Section 4
How does version control for workflows work?
Workflows are versioned like code. You create branches to experiment, diff changes between versions, and merge back when ready. Active workflow instances continue running on their original version until explicitly migrated.
